NGO, donates funds for borehole rehabilitation/one

ZANIS/MONGU/January 28, 2021 = = = The Mwangala Mwenda Foundation has donated Two thousand kwacha to facilitate the rehabilitation of a collapsed borehole at MISHULUNDU Secondary School in Liuwa constituency of Kalabo district in Western province.

 The Foundation Executive Director, Mwangala MWENDA said this in an interview with ZANIS, adding that the foundation has noted with dismay that the pupils at Mishulundu and the nearby villages were drinking contaminated water from Mishulundu stream.

 “Education is the pivot of our core values, therefore, it is very important for us to ensure that we collaborate with government’s efforts to provide a clean and safe environment in the times of this COVID-19 pandemic,” Mwangala Mwenda said.

 Ms Mwenda said as schools are about to re-open on February 1, 2021, the clarion call from President Edgar Lungu on all citizens is to adhere to the COVID-19 health guidelines.

 “Mwangala Mwenda Foundation is consistently looking for ways to educate the girl child and to keep her in school longer. But to be in school, she needs to be safe especially by having safe and clean drinking water away from contamination,” she said.

 The Executive Director said the aim of her foundation is to contribute positively to the well-being of the parents and pupils at Mishulundu Secondary School adding that a sick population is unproductive one hence the need to ensure that there is access to having clean environments at all times.

 “The foundation currently has about 998 pupils drawn from over 34 primary schools in Liuwa constituency getting help from the organization but the figure will grow in 2021 in line with our increased support following the government’s decision to implement the free education policy for primary education. We can, therefore, spend resources in keeping the girl child in school longer,” said Ms Mwenda.

 And Mishulundu Head teacher, ENEST SANDALA has expressed gratitude to the foundation for rehabilitating the three year broken borehole at the school.

 Mr Sandala said the rehabilitated borehole will greatly reduce on water borne diseases that were becoming a thorny issue on the lives of many pupils and the surrounding villages in the locality.

 The Mishulundu Head teacher has however, called on other non-governmental organizations in and outside Western province to emulate what the Mwangala Mwenda Foundation is doing in uplifting the lives of people especially school going children in Kalabo district.
